Halls Motorsport Hit the Ground Running

Steven Lines and the Halls Motorsport Team have certainly hit the ground running in the 2017-18 season, having displayed strong pace from the outset.

Strapping into the driver’s seat of the Brian Hall-owned WA # 3 ARB - Albany supported Cool car for this season, marking the first time that he has piloted the Cool Chassis brand in almost 15 years, Lines has teamed up with new crew chief Dave Sharman, with the duo already having demonstrated that they are going to be a strong force throughout the season.

“It’s fantastic to have a crew chief of Dave’s calibre on board for this season, after my long-time crew chief Craig Bennett stepped away from the team at the end of last season,” said the 33-year-old racer from Mount Gambier in South Australia.

“Dave and I have spent a fair bit of time together in recent months working on the car and we’re gelling really well in our opening three race meetings, which has been one of the main reasons behind us starting the season strongly.”

Starting the season at Murray Bridge Speedway (SA) for the second Ultimate Sprintcar Championship SA round, Lines had made his way up to third place in the feature race, after starting from position six, where he was running strongly until the rough track conditions caused a bolt to break in the front end in the latter stages, resulting in a DNF.

Travelling to Mildura’s Timmis Speedway (Vic) for the Col Beasley Classic the following night, Lines qualified seventh for the feature race; however, an error in the early stages resulted in him spinning out and consequently being sent to the rear of the field. From the back of the field, he managed to salvage a 12th-place finish.

Achieving his first podium result of the new season in last Saturday night’s Jackpot Invitational at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway (Vic), Lines delivered a consistent performance, qualifying third for the $10,000 to win 10-lap feature race, which was a position he was able to maintain through to the fall of the chequered flag.

“Despite not being able to get the win, Saturday night’s result was a pleasing one for the whole team and it’s a real testament to the hard work that Dave and everyone else in the team have been putting in,” enthused Lines.

“Our pace to start the season has been encouraging, and I’m confident that with more track time and the more Dave and I work together, then we’ll be challenging for wins.”

Taking place at his home track – Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway – the Australian Title will be one of the team’s focuses this season, with Lines looking to go one better after achieving his best result in an Australian Title in the 2015 running of the event with a runner-up finish, along with having collected a pair of third-place finishes.

The team will also be contesting most of this season’s blue-ribbon events on the east coast, including World Series Speedweek over the Christmas-New Year period, and the prestigious Grand Annual Classic. The latter is an event that Lines has won twice in his career.

For their next appearance, Lines and the Halls Motorsport team will be heading to Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway (Vic) to contest this Saturday night’s Victorian 410 Sprintcar Title.
